Our Golden Latte Recipe

The 5 Ws of The Golden Latte

As one of our new signature wellness drinks here at Bluestone Lane, this turmeric-infused latte has been booming in popularity with its ever-so-true claims to have amazing health benefits. The buzz about this latte continues and you’ll even find our delicious recipe in the United Inflight magazine where Aubrie Gerber calls the Golden Latte “Liquid Gold’ and reveals the five Ws of this latest cafe craze:

WHAT is a golden latte?

The drink is made by mixing milk or a dairy alternative with turmeric powder or fresh-grated turmeric rhizome, plus add-ins such as black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, and cayenne.

“It goes against the trend of sugary and unhealthy drinks for coffee alternatives,” says Jai Lott, coffee director at New York’s Bluestone Lane, “and we love that.”

WHO invented it?

The golden latte may seem like a new-wave hippie concoction, but it’s actually an age-old Indian medicinal drink, originally called haldi-doodh.

WHEN did it become popular?

According to Google metrics, interest in turmeric grew 56 percent from November 2015 to January 2016, making it Google’s Food Trends Report’s 2016 rising star and “golden milk” one of Google’s top searched terms. “The industry is seeing a trend toward anything that offers health benefits,” Lott says. “[The golden latte] is now on an equal level with matcha, which has been around for much longer.”

WHY should you order one?

“We started serving it because of the amazing health benefits,” says Jessica Huffman, owner of Nourish Juice and Wellness Bar in Houston. Holistic practitioners say turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps inhibit fevers, common colds, and coughs. “We started serving the beverage about the same time last year when one of our staff members kept making herself golden lattes to beat an oncoming cold,” says Julia Kravets, owner of Brooklyn’s Little Choc Apothecary.

WHERE can you try one?
Golden lattes are popping up all over, including at Los Angeles’s Café Gratitude, Montreal’s Café Sfouf, San Francisco’s As Quoted and Samovar Tea, and Melbourne’s Matcha Mylkbar and Crimson Bear. (And, of course, BLUESTONE LANE).
